Police to use face-detecting app – The Hindu

Director-General of Police S.K. Gautam on Saturday said the police will use FaceTagr, a unique face recognition app developed by a private firm to nab criminals and speed up investigation. The app will match the photographs and inputs of hardened criminals and their modus operandi with the details available in police records.

List of criminals

The Police department has prepared a list of 7,500 criminals, including history sheeters and rowdies from across the Union Territory, including their pictures, crime patterns and modus operandi .

The photographs of the criminals have been uploaded on the application.

Crime soars, Chennai cops under siege – The Times Of India

CHENNAI: The attack on an unarmed head constable near Poonamallee on Tuesday night has raised questions about the safety of police officers, especially of junior-rung, on patrol duty.
Around 11pm, a three-member gang hacked
Anbalagan, attached to the Poonamallee police station, for trying to prevent a robbery. The gang had waylaid a pedestrian, Raghu of Hudco Nagar near Poonamallee. After Anbalagan, accompanied by a friends of police (FoP) member Gautham apprehended the three, they chased the policeman and attacked him with a machete, the sequence captured by a CCTV camera nearby
Although police traced the gang with the help of Facetagr application and photographs that Anbalagan had taken, the attack on the policeman, whom the FoP and the victim had deserted, has prompted former jurists and police officers to demand basic weapons for police personnel on duty at night.

Gang hacks cop; assailants held with help of app – News Today

Chennai: Three repeated offenders, who assaulted a head constable of police in the wee hours of today at Kaatupakkam near Poonamallee here, were arrested within hours.

Sources said two of them face murder charges already.

The police said Anbazhagan, head constable attached to Poonamallee police station, was involved in night patrolling.

He intercepted the trio on a motorcycle, who were heading towards Poonamallee. While questioning them, Anbazhagan grew suspicious as the trio gave conflicting answers.

Subsequently, Anbazhagan tried to find out the details of the trio using FaceTagr mobile application.Read More – News Today

WATCH | Drunk bikers attack Chennai cop with ‘sword’ – The New Indian Express

CHENNAI : A police constable was chased and attacked with a sword-like object after he stopped three men who were allegeldly riding a motorbike in a drunken state. The incident took place near Poonamallee on Tuesday night and the men had also snatched the cop’s cell phone.

According to police, Anbualagan, a constable attached to the Poonamallee station, was on night duty when a call came to the control room that three men on a bike who were in an inebriated condition were creating nuisance at Hatco Nagar in Kumananchavadi.

Police may adopt AI to fast-track probe – The Hindu

The department has prepared a list of 700 criminals with their photographs and modus operandi
The Puducherry police are planning to use artificial intelligence to speed up investigation and nab the criminals.

The face recognition system developed by a private firm will match the photographs and inputs of hardened criminals and their modus operandi with the details available in the police records.The face recognition system is part of the Puducherry police department’s ambitious crime prevention plan to be rolled out this month. Investigating officers in each police station will be trained on using the software.

The police believe that it will be an enhanced tool for investigation.Read More
